Changing technology

The 150th Jubilee for Hamilton East is coming up and we are having a look at how things have changed in our school over the last 150 years as a part of our Turangawaewae unit.

This week we are going to explore this HyperDoc and learn some more about technology and what this means. Take a look for yourself if you are at home!

Click here to access the activities.

In class we have started using a programme called Education Perfect and your child should know their login details for this. If they have forgotten or cannot remember please send me an email on sstevenson@hameast.school.nz and I can reset this for you no worries.

Take care!

Te Whare Tapa Wha

In Room 17 this week we have been unpacking Te Whare Tapa Wha and what this means.

Te Whare Tapa Wha is a model of wellbeing and Hauora. You could think of yourself having four walls and a foundation. If you look after these four walls and actively do things to benefit these you support your health and wellbeing. If one wall is challenging you, you have the support of the other walls until it is strengthened again.

Here is an image we have been working from and looking at.

To start our writing this week we brainstormed activities, people or things that can fit into these four catergories. Taha tinana - physical (movement, looking after your body), Taha hinengaro (mental and emotional health), Taha whānau (family, friendships, social) and Taha wairua (spirital - your 'why').

Take a look at our brainstorms.

Could you have a think about these at home also? What are some examples you could use?
Have a try at designing your own Te Whare Tapa Wha and writing or talking about some ideas.

Marble Run

Last week, Room 17 designed and made some marble runs. These were made out of cardboard, popsicle sticks, tape, toilet rolls, bottles and other random items.

It was challenging using tape and trying to get the popsicle sticks in the correct position. The glue was also not very sticky which made it hard.

We tested them by using marbles to see if it would work. We knew it was successful if the marble did not get stuck. The marble did get stuck a few times - whoops! Mistakes make our brain grown.

We also learnt how to work nicely with other people. Some of us have taken our amazing marble runs home!

Welcome Room 17!

 Kia ora.

Welcome to 2022! We are in Room 17 and this is where you will find an insight into what is happening in our wonderful classroom.

We have settled into school life so well. We are learning how to be in our new space together. We have been practising water safety and cyber safety - ask us about this at home.

Wearing masks has been a bit strange but so far so good. If we need a break we are very lucky we have a huge outdoor deck and workspace for a breather.

The swimming pool has been so great to cool off. We are currently learning some water safety basics - how to get in and out of the pool safely, how to float and the effects the current has on us (in a river).
