Catapults - using evidence

We are Scientists in Room 8. Recently we have been researching catapults and seeing how far we can get a pom pom to travel. Many used the statement "My pom pom travelled the furthest!" - we delved deeper and asked what is the evidence? How do I know my pom pom has travelled the furthest?

Using non-standard units of measure - strides, placing rulers together and estimation were our most popular method for measuring. It helped us to think about our statements and if we could prove them.

What do you think of our designs?

Inferences

In Room 8 we are learning how to make inferences with the texts we read. We have been practising this with our reading groups and as a whole class. Did you know we can even make inferences by looking at pictures?

An inference is when you use clues from the text with what you already know. It helps you to figure out what the author is saying!

Can you make inferences by looking at these pictures? Write your ideas in the comments below. We would love to read them,

Treehouse designs

Check out some of the designer treehouses Lillian, Jayden and Braiden have made. If you've designed one - please share with me: sstevenson@hameast.school.nz.

Our next few days of online learning are in the blog post below.

Lillian's design - how cosy and comfy does the swing chair look?

Jayden's fantastic design! Love how all those windows would give you a great viewpoint.

Braiden's treehouse design - including helicopter pad! How amazing!

Home learning - Wiki Toru

 Kia ora,

Hope you are all doing well!

Here are some ideas for some home learning you can do for this Monday and Tuesday. I have assigned you some new tasks on Mathletics, and also some Te Reo on Education Perfect. If we find that we are at home for longer there will be some new tasks here on Wednesday.

Wiki Toru Home Learning

This week is a Hauora challenge. Take a look through the slides - there are many different challenges you could attempt. Thank you so much to Emily in Room 12 for creating this challenge. Why don't you pop over to Room 12's blog and check out what they have been doing for this challenge?

Ally's Homemade Crunchie Bars

How great do these homemade crunchie bars look? Have you done any cooking or baking whilst you've been home? Let me know what you've made by leaving a comment or sending me a picture. Thanks Jessie for making these fantastic videos. Could you write a recipe as well?

Wellbeing Wednesday - Hauora

 Kia ora tamariki and whanau,

Today - Wednesday, 1st September, we enter Alert Level 3. We hope that you have been able to adjust to the

different challenges of lockdown, and that you have had opportunities to enjoy the very special moments of family time.

As a school, we have made the decision to join many schools across New Zealand in having a Wellbeing Wednesday.

On this day, there will be no new digital learning set.

This will be a day away from more formal digital learning. Students will have an opportunity to learn offline and engage in a range of non-digital activities. They might be tasks that your children would like to do together or alone, or they might want to do something else entirely. Suggested activities will be posted on the class blogs.

This day is an opportunity to support students and teacher wellbeing. It is a time to recognise and focus on emotional wellbeing in these challenging situations. We can all do this by providing opportunities to connect, be active, notice, keep learning and give.

An example of what you could do at this time.

Ally's Colouring

Ally has been very busy colouring - have a look and see. Could you do some colouring or drawing today?
