Sound!

Our Pūtaiao focus for the term has been Sound. We have been very busy collecting data about sound through a variety of activities. Room 8 have learnt the different ways sounds are made, how pitch effects the way sound waves look and even experimented creating our own Soundscapes. One of our most exciting activities was creating a telephone out of string, two paper cups and a paper clip!

We first trialled to see if we could feel the vibration from our voices on our own before buddying up. We could! The paperclip shook and it felt like a buzzing in the woollen string. When we partnered up, the vibrations from our voices travelled through the string, vibrated the paper clip, and meant we could all hear each other.

Some children extended the activity to see if the sound waves could travel through four strings and four paper cups - the answer was yes! If the string is pulled tightly, the sound waves were able to travel successfully.

A moment in time

We have been spending a lot of our time practising our Tuhituhi skills in Room 8. We are learning about the different ways to hook in the reader with our writing and using precise verbs and nouns to convey our emotions.

We talked about our shared experiences - one being a ride on at a theme park or carnival.

Planning ideas for how we would feel, what we would hear, what we would see helps us to focus our writing even more and give greater detail.

Check out our awesome ideas during our planning session together.
